Our Services

Pediatric Dental Program

The Pediatric Dental Program at Children’s Hospital of Richmond provides comprehensive services ranging from standard pediatric practices—regular checkups, cleanings and x-rays—to complex procedures such as dental surgery. Services are available for all children—from the well-child to the child with special needs, from infancy through adolescence.

The program, which incorporates a strong emphasis on prevention and dental education, is led by a Pediatric Dentist with specialized training in treating children’s dental needs. The program also has a dentist who specializes general dentistry including the needs of the adolescent population. We have recently completed a full renovation and expansion of our dental program facilities. Click here to read more about our new and improved dental area.

SERVICES

The areas of specialization of the Pediatric Dental Program include:

  • Comprehensive infant/pediatric dental care for both the well-child and the child with special needs
  • Full mouth rehabilitation in operating room setting
  • Multidisciplinary care, with physician involvement, for children with complex medical needs
  • A child-friendly environment for young patients

Dental services are available by appointment on an outpatient basis. Bedside dentistry is provided for patients on the hospital’s Inpatient and Transitional Care Units. The program is registered as a Richmond Head Start Provider and is pursuing this status in surrounding areas. The program also has a dentist who specializes general dentistry including the needs of the adolescent population.

Infant Dental Care

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child’s first dental visit takes place by the first birthday or when the first tooth erupts, unless there is a specific concern. All members of the dental staff at Children’s Hospital of Richmond have special training and experience in providing dental care to infants.

Dental Rehabilitation

Both treatment with nitrous oxide and complete dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia (with an anesthesiologist present) are available onsite; the Children’s Hospital of Richmond Operating Room is primarily dedicated to dental procedures. A child’s medical and dental history is always considered in determining how dental rehabilitation will be performed.

Special Needs Dentistry

The staff members of the Pediatric Dental Program have received special training in treating children with special needs. Dental chairs and equipment are wheelchair accessible. Free parking is available on-site and conveniently located near the entrance to the hospital’s Dental Suite.

Family-Centered, Child-Friendly Dental Care

The Pediatric Dental Program focuses on creating a comfortable, safe environment for patients. Personal attention is given to each child to ensure that all patients are at ease during their visits.

Additionally, the Pediatric Dental Team recognizes the important role of the parent or guardian in terms of helping children develop proper dental care habits at a young age. Staff members place a special focus on family education, which includes providing information and training in dental care and prevention.
