Programs Made Possible
Like a young child, Children’s Hospital has had a major growth spurt over the last year. The Hospital has grown by leaps and bounds to better serve our patients. We have expanded the Transitional Care Unit to 47 inpatient beds, renovated the playground and education areas, added additional space to our West Therapy Center and opened a new Therapy Center in Petersburg. This growth would not be possible without the help of the many donors who give to Children’s Hospital Foundation throughout the year.
Our recent expansions and renovations will allow us to see more children than ever before. By being a resource and provider of specialized medical and therapeutic services customized to meet the specific needs of children and their families, Children’s Hospital is helping children across Central Virginia grow physically, emotionally and mentally.
Recent projects funded by community gifts include:
Transitional Care Unit Expansion
After sixteen months of construction, the renovated and expanded Carolyn Bennett Arnold Transitional Care Unit (TCU) opened in fall 2008 with 24 additional beds, renovated patient living and activity areas and additional nursing and staff space. This expansion was made possible by gifts from our community totaling $5.3 million.
Opening the New Petersburg Therapy Center
For a number of years, Children’s Hospital was encouraged by physicians and other health care providers in the Tri-city area to bring accessible, specialized health care services to children in their community. After seeing the needs for pediatric physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy in the area, Children’s Hospital made Petersburg the site of our fifth location, opening in November 2008.
Renovating “Children’s Park”
The Children’s Hospital playground, called Children’s Park, was renovated in 2008. An outdoor experience is an important aspect of the continued care and progress of our inpatient residents, as well as for all of the children we treat. Children’s Park is a healing environment which is safe, accessible to children with disabilities, and facilitates therapeutic play. The scope of the renovations included a completely new design, new equipment and appropriate landscaping.
Children’s Activities Fund
Many gifts are also given directly to the Children’s Activities Fund, which enables Children’s Hospital to provide field trips and other activities throughout the year to our inpatient and day patient children. Activities include an annual trip to Virginia Beach, frequent outings in the surrounding community, and other special events such as a visit to the Great Wolf Lodge water park in Williamsburg.
Ongoing Equipment Needs
Children’s Hospital depends on gifts to meet ongoing equipment needs as well. These needs include clinical equipment such as toys, balance beams, therapy “wiggle” bikes, inpatient beds, treatment tables, and mats, as well as general office needs like computers and furniture.
