A History of Giving
As a hospital founded by a doctor who wanted to do more, located in a building funded by the charitable gift of a local woman, Children’s Hospital is based on a foundation of generosity and giving.
Founded in 1917 by Dr. William Tate Graham, Virginia’s first orthopaedic surgeon, Children’s Hospital moved into its current home in 1928 after receiving a $500,000 bequest from Sallie May Dooley of Richmond. From doctors and nurses serving patients, to the medical supplies and the hospital building, every aspect of Children’s Hospital’s beginning is based upon donations and volunteers.

Continuing the Spirit of Giving
As we remember these wonderful gifts given to Children’s Hospital in the past, it is important to remember that people continue to give more and more to the hospital each day. Whether it is time, skills or money, the gifts of the community truly are what enable Children’s Hospital to continue as a resource and provider of specialized medical and therapeutic services for children and adolescents with temporary to lifetime needs. You too can share your gifts with the patients of Children’s Hospital by making a donation, volunteering your time or attending a special event.
No matter how you choose to participate or at what level, your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping Children's Hospital Foundation continue its mission of caring for children.
