Peter Pan Birthday Club Benefits Children’s Hospital Foundation

When 10-year old Sophia’s recent birthday approached she decided to do something different. She decided to have a birthday party with NO PRESENTS. Why? According to Sophia, “I just got too many presents at Christmas and I wanted to help people out.”

Following the model of the Peter Pan Birthday Club, Sophia told her friends that she wanted to help sick children. She asked them not to bring a gift, but instead asked them to bring a check for Children’s Hospital in the amount they would normally spend on a gift. “My friends thought that was a really good idea!” said Sophia. Indeed it was. Sophia’s party was a huge success. Together they raised $300, plus a $100 gift from the Peter Pan Children’s Fund for a total contribution of $400 to the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Sophia is the first local area child to join the youth philanthropy initiatives of the Peter Pan Children’s Fund and support Children’s Hospital.  The fund’s mission is to educate and celebrate young philanthropists who support hospitals that care for children. The Birthday Club became the first official program of the Peter Pan Children’s Fund in the United States during the 1990’s. Since then thousands of children and teenagers have made monetary donations to children’s hospitals. Adults have joined in as well and over the years nearly half a million dollars has been raised to help sick and injured children.

Sophia made a personal visit to the hospital in February to present her donation. She also took a tour of the hospital and got a first-hand look at how her sacrifice and generosity would benefit other children. Asked how it made her feel, “I was really proud of myself and I was happy!” she replied.
