Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s partner on several safety initiatives, all part of the Improve Your Safety Sense campaign. These programs aim to educate children in a fun and interactive way about important topics related to their health and well being. They also provide resources for teachers to use in the classroom to continue these lessons following the event. These events include:
Health & Safety Day
Held annually in both Richmond and Fredericksburg, Health and Safety Day brings area children together to learn about proper nutrition, dental hygiene, emergency services, bike safety, disability awareness and more. Geared toward four to six year olds, over 1200 children attend this event each year. Click here to view a photo collage from the 2008 Richmond Health & Safety Day
Back to School Safety Fair
Started in 2005, the Back to School Safety Fair goes out into the community each August to prepare children for their return to school with information on bus safety, backpack safety, proper nutrition for optimal learning and more. In 2007 this event will take place on August 26 at a Richmond Braves game when Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s team up to present “Back to School Safety Day.”
The following audio files are live coverage of the 2006 Back-to-School Safety Fair with the Safety School Principal, Lite 98’s Bill Bevins and Ashley Langford, Special Events Coordinator.

Fire Prevention Day
Geared toward three to five year olds, Fire Prevention Day is held each October to educate area children about fire prevention and introduce them to community rescue personnel such as fire fighters and police officers. Several Safety Houses are a highlight of the day. These are interactive trailers that teach household, cooking and smoke detector safety. These trailers are provided by area fire departments and can be filled with non-toxic smoke to teach evacuation techniques.
The Improve Your Safety Sense campaign reaches thousands of Richmond and Fredericksburg area children each year with these community events.
