Locations & History

Founded in 1928 as the “Crippled Children’s Hospital,” our main hospital is located in historic Richmond, VA. At the time of its founding, the current main hospital location was considered on the outskirts of town and thought was that the fresh country air would be good for patients. The building was modeled by its designers after a building in Italy, giving our hospital a truly unique personality. Although significant changes have been made to keep our facility up to date with the latest technology and space requirements, we continue to operate out of the original building 80 years later.

Children’s Hospital has developed over the years from its roots as a place for needy children with orthopedic problems usually associated with polio to a facility that provides specialty pediatric care to children from birth to age 21. In 2008, we treated over 7,200 patients; provided $10.4 million in uncompensated care; and opened a new therapy center in the Petersburg area.

At our main hospital, we have an inpatient unit that provides long-term care, outpatient therapy services, Children’s Feeding Program, pediatric dental services and multispecialty clinics for spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spasticity. In addition to the main hospital in Richmond, there are four (4) offsite therapy centers in the Central Virginia area: Fredericksburg, Glen Allen, Petersburg and Midlothian.

Children’s Hospital continues to operate as a private, nonprofit facility providing pediatric specialty services that are not readily available anywhere else in the community.
